Bug Blaster! - 3D Shooter Game

This is the third video game that I created for a Coursera.com class.

The Coursera class provided me with a template of 3D shooter game assets. The class taught students how to put the assets together to create a coherent game.

Developing this game was a blast (pun intended). With the third dimension to work with and a wider array of enemies to fight against and more weapons on our arsenal, the limits of what can be created were pushed.

I set out to create relatively large and involved maps. I created the first level with the vision of a maze in mind. I pieced together walls to create the maze. I populated the maze with an enemy density that was not too overwhelming since it was only the first level. I wanted to implement at least one creative element for each level and the creative element here was that the key card needed to proceed was above the level of the maze; with the key-card visible from the spawn point but just out of reach. So close, and yet so far away.

I designed the second level by first placing the spawn portal and the exit portal. I then fleshed out the path from Point A to Point B. This were to be an adventure through elevation with moving platforms that required unconventional thinking in order to traverse. After a default route had been mapped, I populated the map but this time, with friends. The entities on the second level do more good than harm because they can literally carry the player to their destination, thus providing the player a shortcut. This was the creative element that I implemented on this level.

I wanted to try my hand at creating boss fights in the 3 dimensions, and so the Bug Queen was born for level 3. I wanted to create a boss-fight mechanic to make things interesting. The overall system of the mechanic that I decided to build composed of the Bug Queen being invulnerable and lamps that would make the Bug Queen vulnerable. I accomplished this by modifying the Bug Queen to be invulnerable and building a system of lamps. There are 4 lamps. One of the lamps with glow red and this is the lamp that will make the Bug Queen vulnerable to damage. I programmed the 4 lamps to be connected and to have only one red lamp cycling through the four lamps.

I also created a bonus level that heavily involves platforming for any platformer lovers.

I went far above and beyond the requirements of what was to be submitted for the final project of this Coursera class.

With this game, I earned a Coursera.com certificate for Game Design and Development 3: 2D Platformer. The certificate is linked [here.]
