Space-Base Race - 2D Platformer

This is the second video game that I created for a Coursera.com class.

The Coursera class provided me with a template of 2D platformer game assets. The class taught students how to put the assets together to create a coherent game.

In creating this game, I wanted to explore the possibilities of how to make a 2D platformer challenging. I achieved this by implementing fast-moving platforms that were relatively small. This requires the player to have good timing and good control of the character’s body.

Another goal of mine for this game was creating power-ups to make the game more interesting. I felt that buffing the player’s mobility would make the game more fun. So I designed 2 power-ups that would buff the player’s mobility. I built the Bunny-Jump and the Cheetah-Speed power-ups by modifying preexisting pick-ups. I created animated sprites/pixel art for the 2 new power-ups using PiskelApp.com. I wrote code that would modify the player’s mobility variables upon item pick up. I designed the levels around the 2 power-ups by requiring the player to have these mobility buffs in order to proceed.

Another goal of mine for this game was finding creative ways to design the content. The final boss was designed to not be defeated, but instead it was more of a puzzle for the player to realize that the “boss” entity was there to help the player reach their goal.

With this game, I earned a Coursera.com certificate for Game Design and Development 2: 2D Platformer. The certificate is linked [here.]
